Welcome to the Shiribeshi region

Shiribeshi is one of Hokkaido’s most famous areas for
tourism with abundant nature, wide-open spaces and an active,
seasonal life-style.

Our region sits between two of Hokkaido’s most
beautiful areas, Shikotsuko-Toya National Park and the
Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Coastal Park. At the centre are
prominent landmarks Mt Yotei, also known as Hokkaido’s Mt
Fuji, and the Annupuri ranges, which we like to refer to as the
Niseko Alps.

We are blessed with clean rivers, bountiful forests, beautiful
farming landscapes and rugged coasts. And history too, which
you can see in the stately streets lined with historic buildings and
canals in the port city of Otaru. Everything is set off by Hokkaido’s
four vivid seasons.

The land and seas provide great bounty: You can enjoy
wholesome fresh fish and produce. The delicacy of the food
produced in the Shiribeshi area captivates many visitors.

The Shiribeshi summer is cool and dry and provides the
perfect complement to winter. Visitors can be at one with nature,
with activities such as rafting, canoeing and para-gliding. Try
picking fruit or making soba; visit our glass-blowing studios and
pottery houses.

In winter, the mountains provide not only a beautiful
backdrop but some of the best locations for skiing and snow
boarding in Japan. Shiribeshi’s excellent snow and many ski
pistes have attracted visitors from all over the world in recent
years and made Niseko a popular tourist destination overseas.

Visitors have helped bring overseas investment to Niseko,
including new condominiums and pensions as well as plans
for new large-scale resorts. We believe the Niseko region will
be developed as a resort area that will cater to extended-stay
tourism and be of a world-class standard. Niseko is just one
hour by car from Lake Toya, an area of outstanding natural
beauty that will be the venue for the Hokkaido Toya G8 Summit
in July 2008.

ようこそ後志へ 　
小さな島国日本にありながらも、広い大地の開放的な
印象と、四季折々に違った表情をみせる、豊かな自然に恵ま
れた北海道。
ここ後志は、北海道の西部に位置し、支笏・洞爺国立
公園、ニセコ・積丹・小樽海岸国定公園に囲まれ、羊蹄山・
ニセコ連峰をはじめとした雄大な自然と、明瞭な四季が紡ぎ
だす美しい農漁村風景、レトロな建築物と運河が織りなす風
格のある街並みの小樽など、価値ある観光資源が豊富な地域
です。
また、豊かな海と大地に育まれた食材の宝庫であり、
新鮮な素材そのもの美味しさを味わえるだけでなく、その特
長を活かした料理や食品も多彩で、後志の「食」には、誰も
を虜にする魅力が溢れています。
夏は冷涼で、自然との一体感が満喫できるラフティン
グ、カヌー、スカイスポーツなど様々なスポーツが楽しめる
ほか、果物狩りやそば打ち、ガラス工芸や陶芸など、季節ご
とに、あるいは四季を通じて体験できるメニューも充実して
います。
ニセコ地域は「えぞ富士」と称される羊蹄山、ニセコ
連峰などの四季折々の美しい景観をはじめ、豊かな森林、清
らかな川などの大自然が満喫できるほか、特に、冬の降雪量
は日本国内屈指で、雪質はパウダースノーと称され、スキー
やスノーボードを楽しむには最高のロケーションです。
最近は、ニセコ地域を中心に、良質な雪と多彩なゲレ
ンデに魅せられた外国人観光客が世界各国から訪れているほ
か、海外資本によるコンドミニアムやペンションの建設、大
型リゾート開発計画も進められてきております。
また、来年７月に開催されます「北海道洞爺湖サミッ
ト」会場の洞爺湖にも車で１時間くらいでアクセスするなど
周辺にすばらしい観光地もあり、今後、国際的な長期滞在型
リゾート地として、発展することが期待されている地域です
。
